Brent's relationship with Bob McEwen began when Coach McEwen's son Tim was a patient at the Montreal Children's Hospital along with Brent. As their friendship developed, Brent revealed that his biggest dream was to be involved with a major hockey team. The John Abbott College Islanders played a role in the fulfillment of that dream.

While the original inspiration for the Mingo-McEwen Fund came from Brent, subsequently two other youngsters joined the team, Jordan Gillis in the second year and Meagan Harney in the third.

Exposed at birth to bacterial meningitis, he endured three brain operations before the age of one month. As a result of the meningitis, he has brain abscesses which cause him to have seizures. He also has a disability to the right side of his body.

Joseph-Chandler Lane is a 7-year-old boy who spent the first week of his life at the Montreal Children’s hospital, where he was diagnosed with Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum. With a wonderful team of professionals Joey is making great progress.
